David Krippendorff

LOOK AT ME, 2023

HD, color, stereo, 9 min. 39 sec.

On Easter Sunday 1939, Marian Anderson sang at the Lincoln Memorial. 75,000 people had come to Washington, DC, from all over the United States to see her perform. Anderson had no choice but to sing outdoors: as a Black woman, she was prohibited from performing at Constitution Hall, the only concert hall in Washington, DC, with enough space to accommodate the huge audience.

This is the historical reference for LOOK AT ME, in which Krippendorff has placed a record player on the stage of an empty theater. While a record plays Anderson singing Bach’s Erbarme dich, the sound is slowly muffled by a series of red theater curtains closing in front of it until her voice becomes virtually inaudible.
